Skills

UORoots is in the Mondain's Legacy era: the game uses 55 skills in this era. This page covers the rules that apply to all of them — how a skill rises, how far, and where it gets stuck. The individual skills are on seven guide pages.

The Stygian Abyss skills (Mysticism, Imbuing, Throwing) do not work in this era; Bushido and Ninjitsu cannot be used for now because their books are only sold in Tokuno, which is closed.

How does a skill rise?

A skill rises by using it. What teaches you most is the hardest task you can manage: easy work gives almost nothing, and a failed attempt gives much less than a successful one. So always do work you "only just" manage.

Rule Value
Gain rate 1.5 times classic UO
Total skill cap 700 (720 with the veteran reward)
Single skill cap 100; 105, 110, 115, 120 with power scrolls
Stat cap 225 total, 125 for a single stat
Stat gain The same speed as classic UO; a small chance on every skill attempt

The total cap slows you down. As you approach 700, the gain rate drops. Lock (down arrow) or lower skills you do not use in the skills window; that frees up room.

Where you get stuck

Starting from zero: NPC trainers

An NPC teaches you up to a third of their own skill, at most up to 42 points.

  1. Left-click the NPC who teaches the skill → Train <skill name>.
  2. The NPC names the fee. Drag the gold onto the NPC as a single stack.
  3. Gold dropped without choosing a skill counts as a donation and does not come back. If you split the payment, the second stack is lost too.

An NPC only teaches the skills of their own trade; you find where each merchant is from the UORoots EN Vendors markers on the World Map.

Beyond 100: power scrolls

To go beyond 100 you need a power scroll: 105, 110, 115 and 120. The scrolls drop from champion altars → Champion Altars. Scrolls that raise your stat cap come from the same place.

Double-click the scroll and choose the skill; that skill's cap rises. The 700 total cap does not change: a skill at 120 takes 120 of the total.

Reading your skills window

The Skills button on your paperdoll. The arrow next to each skill:

Message colors: when you use a skill or tool, success is written in light blue and failure in orange (digging, the result in the crafting window, bandaging, lockpicking, taming, hiding, bard and lore skills…). Target prompts and information lines stay gray.
