Gathering Skills
Three skills that take raw materials out of the world:
Mining,
Lumberjacking,
Fishing. All of crafting is fed by them.
The rest of the fisher's and farmer's life — orders, registers, big catches, weekly contests — is on the Gatherer page. The general rules are in Skills.
Mining and lumberjacking: 30 strikes on one spot
In mining and lumberjacking, after 30 strikes within 10 minutes within 4 tiles of the same spot, you gain no more skill. Resources keep coming, only skill gain stops; you get a warning when the window fills up.
The fix is simple and is the game's natural flow anyway: move on as the vein runs out. A macro hitting the same rock for hours without moving gains nothing; a miner who wanders around never notices.
Fishing has no such limit. The fisher's limit is the water itself: when the fish in a spot run out, the game says "The fish don't seem to be biting here." and the skill does not rise there either; the fish come back in 10–20 minutes. Move a few steps away, or out to sea by boat.
Mining
Tool:
pickaxe or
shovel · Where: mountainsides, rock walls and cave floors.
Double-click the pickaxe and target the rock. You smelt the
ore at a forge into
ingots — smelting also gives a little skill.
Colored ore only comes as your skill allows:
| Skill | What comes out |
|---|---|
| 0 | Iron |
| 65 | Dull Copper |
| 70 | Shadow Iron |
| 75 | Copper |
| 80 | Bronze |
| 85 | Gold |
| 90 | Agapite |
| 95 | Verite |
| 99 | Valorite |
Colored ore both sells for more and makes stronger armor. At 100 skill your pickaxe now and then also turns up gems → What Is It For?
Watch out: elementals can come out of colored veins; once you pass 65, keep a weapon at hand or a way to run.
How it rises: by mining from start to finish. There is no separate "training method"; you break rock from 0 to 100. Start in the mountains close to town and move to remote veins as your skill rises.
Scenario — a protected miner in a remote vein: once you move to veins far from town, creatures attack while you swing your pickaxe; after 65, elementals come out of colored veins too. Take a hired fighter with you and give them Command: Guard: while you mine, they fight whatever attacks. The same goes for chopping wood in the forest. The fee is taken every 30 minutes; work out whether the ore pays for it. How to hire → Hireling NPCs
Lumberjacking
Tool:
hatchet or axe · Where: trees.
Double-click the hatchet and target a tree. The
logs you get are turned into
boards with carpentry tools.
Special woods come as your skill allows:
| Skill | What comes out |
|---|---|
| 0 | Ordinary logs |
| 65 | Oak |
| 80 | Ash |
| 95 | Yew |
| 100 | Heartwood, bloodwood, frostwood |
At 100 skill, trees now and then also give extra materials such as bark fragments, brilliant amber and mushrooms; what each is for → What Is It For?
How it rises: by chopping. Lumberjacking also raises the damage you deal with an axe — a second reason for axe warriors.
Fishing
Tool:
fishing pole · Where: any water.
Double-click the fishing pole and target the water. A fish you catch does not cook as it is: first cut it into steaks with a knife, then cook it with a skillet next to a fire → Cooking fish.
| Skill | What happens |
|---|---|
| 0–80 | Fish, boots, old junk; the occasional chest |
| 80+ | Big fish (weighed and recorded) and white pearls start to come up |
You fish better in deep water (out at sea by boat); treasure chests and messages in a bottle also come out of the water. For the fisherman's log, big catches and weekly contest rewards → Gatherer.
How it rises: by fishing. Interesting things start to come up as your skill rises; past 80 is the real joy of fishing.
