Installation and First Login
There are two ways into UORoots:
- Desktop (Windows): the UORoots installer and launcher. Razor, automatic updates and the smoothest play are here.
- Browser (Windows, macOS, Linux): nothing to install; the game opens in a browser tab at play.uoroots.com → Playing in the browser.
Both are the same UORoots client. The English text of the game lives in this client and its language files; if you log in with any other client, much of the game will not display correctly.
Installation
- Download the installer from uoroots.com/en/download (a ZIP of about 1.5 GB). Right-click the file → Extract All, then run UORoots-Kurulum.exe from the extracted folder.
- If Windows shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info → Run anyway. (The installer is not digitally signed yet.)
- The installer does not ask for administrator rights. It puts a UORoots shortcut on your desktop.
The installer contains every file the game needs: you do not have to install Ultima Online, .NET or a Visual C++ package separately. The game data files are pinned to the exact version the server expects. Requirements: Windows 10 (1803 or later) or 11, 64-bit; about 4.5 GB of free space (you can delete the ZIP after installing).
First login
- Double-click the UORoots shortcut on your desktop; the launcher opens and checks for updates. Choose ENGLISH with the flag buttons next to PLAY (see Game language), then press PLAY.
- On the login screen, type your game account name and game password and press ENTER THE WORLD. The server address is already set. If you tick Remember me, your account name and password are remembered on this computer; do not tick it on a shared computer.
- Create your character: every new character starts in Britain under Young player protection → Young Players.
- In the game, say menu or double-click the Traveler's Journal in your backpack. At the inn in Britain (just east of the bank), Innkeeper Agatha leads you to your first quests → Traveler's Road.
You open your game account yourself on the My Account page at uoroots.com; sign-up is open to everyone → Web Account and Game Accounts. If a game administrator opened an account for you earlier, you link it to your web account there as well.
Playing in the browser
The desktop installer is for Windows only; on macOS or Linux you enter UORoots through your browser. On Windows it is also a way to try the game without installing.
What you need:
- A computer with a keyboard and mouse. It does not work on phones or tablets.
- An up-to-date Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Other browsers may open the game but are untested; a warning is shown at start-up and you may see display or sound problems.
- On first launch about 2.7 GB of game files download once and are stored in the browser; later launches only download files that changed.
Logging in:
- Open play.uoroots.com and press PLAY.
- Do not close the tab while the game files download; the login screen opens when the progress bar finishes.
- On the login screen, type your game account name and game password and press ENTER THE WORLD. Your web password does not work in the game. In the browser, Remember me only remembers the account name; the password is not stored.
- From here it is the same as the desktop: create your character and start with the Traveler's Journal and Innkeeper Agatha (steps 3 and 4 of First login).
Differences from the desktop:
| Desktop | Browser | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10/11 | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| Installation | Required (ZIP of about 1.5 GB) | None |
| Razor | Yes | No |
| Game language | Chosen in the launcher | Set by the address: play.uoroots.com is English |
| Updates | The launcher downloads them | Arrive when you reload the page |
There is no Razor in the browser; using any other assistant or automation tool is forbidden by the Server Rules.
Updates: when a new version is released, a "UORoots was updated" bar appears in the open tab. Reload the page (F5) right away, or after logging out if you are in the game.
Problems:
- Loading is stuck: clear the cache with the Manage storage link at the bottom of the page and reload.
- "This browser cannot run the game": your browser lacks a feature the game needs; try an up-to-date Chrome or Edge.
- "Not enough memory": close other tabs and programs and try again; a 64-bit browser is required.
UORoots launcher
The UORoots shortcut on your desktop opens the launcher:
- Automatic updates: game fixes and language files download in a few seconds every time the launcher opens; you never need to download the installer again.
- What's New: announcements and the latest changes in the game.
- Server status: whether the server is up, your ping in ms and how many people are in the game; refreshed every 30 seconds.
- Guide: these pages can also be read inside the launcher.
- Quick links: My Account (on the website), Player Guide, Community, Discord and Support.
- PLAY: starts the game; you log in with your account name and password on the login screen. While the game is running you can press PLAY again to open another window (the launcher opens at most 3 game windows at once). If there is an update, it downloads once every game window is closed.
- Verify files: if the game will not start or behaves oddly, this finds and repairs broken files. If the game data files themselves are damaged, it tells you to run the installer again and shows a button that opens the download page.
- If an update has not downloaded, PLAY will not start the game on the old version (the server does not accept an outdated client); it tells you to check your connection and press it again.
Game language
You choose the language with the flag buttons just left of PLAY in the launcher: pick ENGLISH. The same choice is in Settings (the gear icon).
- The launcher's own text switches at once; the game opens in that language on your next PLAY.
- On a fresh install, English is selected unless your computer's language is Turkish.
- In English the game shows: the whole client interface, the login screen, item, spell and skill names, system messages, the Traveler's Journal and Quest Tracker, quests and NPC dialogue, merchant, hunting and zoologist orders, the market, the help window, notifications and creature names. Razor also opens in English.
- In the browser the language comes from the address: play.uoroots.com opens in English.
- A few new or rarely seen messages may not be translated yet. If you see one, report it in the game: Traveler's Journal → Help → Report a bug or exploit.
- The language only changes your own screen: chat and what other players write go through as they are.
Default layout for your screen
The launcher prepares the game for your screen: on your first login with a new character, the game view opens large on the left; on the right are the status window (a health bar on narrow screens), paperdoll, backpack and journal, with the mini-map and buff bar in the corners of the game view. On large screens the interface is scaled up so the text stays readable (e.g. 1.1× at 2560×1440). If you change the interface size yourself in the game options, the launcher leaves it alone; windows stay where you move them.
On small screens (e.g. 1024×768, 800×600) a right-hand column would cover the game, so the game view fills the whole window; the health bar sits top right, the backpack bottom right, and the paperdoll comes as an icon. Open the journal and mini-map from the menu bar at the top (Journal, Map).
The game window opens full screen the first time this layout is applied; after that it opens however you left it.
Characters you created earlier open with their own layout. To switch them to this layout too: launcher → Settings (gear icon) → Reset window layout → confirm (with the game closed). Your old layout is kept as a backup in the character's folder.
Razor
The installer includes Razor (Razor Community Edition), switched off by default; with English selected, Razor opens in English. To turn it on: launcher → Settings (gear icon) → Use Razor → on your next PLAY the Razor window opens together with the game. Macros, hotkeys, counters and agents are there.
- Razor's settings, macros and profiles live in the
Razorfolder inside the install folder; updates do not touch them. - Rules: looping macros only while you are at the keyboard; no other assistants or scripting tools → World and Basic Rules.
- Skill, spell and weapon special move names in Razor are the same as in the game; when writing a macro, search for the name you see in the game.
- Some of Razor's internal warning windows may stay untranslated.
- My macros type into chat (lines like "3333…" go out): while the chat line is open, hotkeys turn into text. In the game options tick Options → Speech → "Active chat when pressing ENTER"; chat then only opens when you press Enter and your hotkeys no longer type into it.
- The game only loads the Razor files UORoots distributes; if you put another plugin or a modified file into the
Razorfolder, Razor will not open at all. If that happens: launcher → Verify files.
A short introduction is shown on first launch; you can bring it back later with Settings (gear icon) → "Show the welcome guide".
In-game menu bar
The menu bar at the top of the screen has been trimmed down: Map, Paperdoll, Inventory, Journal, Traveler's Journal, World Map, Help. Buttons that do not work on this server or are of no use to players (old chat, global chat, the UO store, developer and network statistics) were removed. You can collapse the menu bar with the button at its far left.
Updates
You can only log in to the server with UORoots' own client: the up-to-date desktop client the launcher installs, or the browser client at play.uoroots.com. Other clients (the original UO client, plain ClassicUO, Orion and so on) and outdated versions are rejected when moving to the character list, with the warning "There is some problem communicating with Origin". If that happens, close every game window, wait for the launcher to download the update, then press PLAY (updates do not download while the game is running). When a new version comes out, the previous one is still accepted for a while.
The launcher handles day-to-day updates by itself (in the browser, reloading the page is enough). If a new installer is published, run it and install into the same folder; your settings and window layout (profile) are kept.
The installer package on the download page may look old — that is fine. The package is only a starting copy; on first launch the launcher brings both itself and the game files up to the latest version. Whichever package you install, you play the current version; a newer package only makes the first-launch patch smaller.
Uninstalling
Start menu → UORoots → uninstall entry, or Windows Settings → Apps.
